Medical psychology is an integrated part of the education of future doctors in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Germany. It is based on preclinical tuition of students and on the comprehensive bio-psycho-social model of health and illness. Medical psychology as a scientific discipline deals with following subjects in research and education:
- the patients’ experience of physical illness
- the influence of coping processes on recovery
- doctor-patient relationship and communication
- ethical aspects of medical attitudes, decision-making and treatment
- psychological aspects of treatment.
Another focus of medical psycholoy is health promotion and prevention. The development of interventions that promote healthy life styles in persons is getting more and more important to reduce the negative impact on health caused by wide-spread risk factors like smoking, bad nutrition, lack of movement etc.
The lecture will give an introduction into this topic of medical education and research by presenting its basics and historical roots.
