Conferences
30th of September - 4th of October 2007 in cooperation with the University of Konstanz an Estonian-German academic week Academica XI was held. There were several presentations, lectures and workshops. In addition the Tartu alumni club of University of Konstanz was founded.
28th - 29th of September 2007 in cooperation withFaculty of Law and Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Tartu an international conference dedicated on the conception of sovereignty titled"Transforming Sovereignities - The concept of sovereignty in the field of tension between power and law" was held.All the talks areavailiblein the University videoportal.
26th - 29th of May2007 in cooperation with the University of Bern the first part of a two-part international conference "Haunted Narratives – The Politics and Poetics of Identity Formation and Life Writing" was held. During the event philosophical, literary and cultural approaches were taken to the question: how individuals and communities cope with traumatic past and how it is depicted in literature and art.
9th- 10th of May 2007 in collaboration with the Estonian Association of Science History and Philosophy of Science an international conference “Science Studies: Aims and Methods” was held. The main objective was methodological questions about human nature in research of interdisciplinary sciences.
6th of February in 2007 in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Research and Eesti Päevaleht a conference "Reflective Estonia: values and choices" took place. The main issues were establishing the values of civil society, democracy, justice, ethics, nationality, integration, language and cultural identity.
27th - 28th of January 2007 took place winter school of the Open University of the Philosophy Department with the theme "From abulia to self-deception - the silence of the mind?". Students from the Open University and also teachers, MA and PhD students gave presentations.
Colloquia
11th December 2007 dr. Maria E. Reicher (University of Graz), who was one of the opponentsatMarek Volt's PhD defence, held a lecture titled "The Ontology of Fictional Characters".
6th December2007 dr. Pille Valk from the Faculty of Theology of University of Tartu made a presentation on the education of chastity in the context of Estonian educational system. Her presentation was a part of a value development program.
16th November 2007 one of the leading schollars on Karl Marx- prof. David McLellan (University of Londoni, Goldsmith collage) - held two lectures on Karl Marx titled "The Young Marx Revisited"and "Marx's Critique of Religion".
8th November 2007 dr. Jaana Vasema, who is the head of the Finnish Institute in Estiona, made a presentation on education on values in which she talked about the education of values in Finnish schools. Her presentation was a part of a value development program.
31th October 2007 Philosophy department's doctoral studentMärt Põder made a presentation on education of values in which he talked about attempts to perfect the education of values and natural boundries set to it. His presentation was a part of a value development program.
1th - 3th of October 2007 in cooperation with the University of Konstanz a workshop within the Estonian-German academic week Academica XI was held. The topic of the workshop was truth and there were presenters from Estonia, Germany, Finland and England.
10th of May 2007 in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine a lecture titled "The bladder in room 12 or: behind each disease is a person. An introduction into Medical Psychology" was given by prof Hans-Joachim Hannich.
13th - 15th of February 2007 a workshop titled "Conceptions of Truth" was given by prof. Wolfgang Künne. This was a part of the "Gottlob Frege Lectures in Theoretical Philosophy" project.
Book presentations
2nd November 2007 in cooperation with Office of the President of Estonia, Estonian Ministry of Education and Research and the journal Akadeemia the collection of the essay contest What Kind of Estonia Do I Want to Live In?"was presented, which in addition to the best works included comments from the judges and organizers. 26th of June 2007 Centre for Ethics presented their new book „Handbook of Codes of Conduct“ which was published with support from Estonian Opened Foundation. Representatives from several organizations gave presentation on their codes of conducts there was also a general discussion on codes of conducts. See also our publications section.
16th of March 2007 in collaboration with the EstonianWomen Student Society the new book "Estonian Female Ministers. Collection of writings about women at the top of politics" was presented. See also our publications section.
Other events
26thNovember 2007 in cooperation with Eesti Raadio's show "Night University" and Athena center a public recording of the show "Night University" was organized, where the guest Jaan Kaplinski talked about values, satisfaction in life and conditions of happiness.
23rd of February - 23rd of April 2007 in collaboration with the Office of the President of Estonia an essay contest titled "What Kind of Estonia Do I Want to Live In?" was organized. The winners will be announced on 23rd of June and best works will be published.
28th of February2007 in collaboration with the Estonian Women Student Society a discussion session titled "What is the Role of Women in Politics?" took place
22nd of February2007 in collaboration with the Women Student Society a discussion session titled "For Who and Why is Equal Representation in Politics Necessary?"
