Conferences and workshops
The Centre for Ethics, University of Tartu’s 9th values-based education conference “Dilemmas in School Life” was held on the 9th of December. The conference discussed how to notice what is important and valuable for us in school life and, furthermore, how to make more informed choices in creating wholesome values-based schools. The conference “Multicultural schools – how to support students, teachers and parents?” was held on the 21th of October in Tallinn. The educational experts from the United States alongside a group of domestic experts shared their experience in supporting new immigrants in schools and discussed our own experience of multiculturalism, religious diversity and opportunities for supporting students with a migrant background. The conference was organized by the Centre for Ethics, University of Tartu and the Estonian Refugee Council.
On the 23rd of August, the conference "Estonia AND the Nordic Countries – Estonia AS a Nordic Country" was held. The conference was organized by the Centre for Ethics, University of Tartu in cooperation with the Nordic Council of Ministers, the Royal Norwegian Embassy, the Embassy of Sweden, the Royal Danish Embassy, the Embassy of Finland, the Ministry of Education and Research, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. On the 29th of January, the conference "Is it possible to learn from history?" took place. The aim of the conference was to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust and to raise awareness of the Holocaust. The conference sought to answer the questions how a totalitarian regime in society could emerge, what it means to assign economic value to human life and whether it is possible to learn from history. The conference was organized by the Estonian Atlantic Treaty Association in cooperation with the Unitas Foundation, the Centre for Ethics, University of Tartu, and the Museum of Occupations. Colloquia
The Centre for Ethics, University of Tartu participated in the “Values-Based Education Stage” at the annual Opinion Festival held on the 12th and the 13th of August. The Centre hosted two discussions: "Fundamental rights in public sphere and schools – a genuine Estonian thing" and "Is values-based leadership possible in Estonia?". The discussions on the "Values-based Education Stage" were organized by the Centre for Ethics, Interesting School, the Estonian Union for Child Welfare, YFU, NGO Mondo, the University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy, and the Tallinn University Migration Network. In addition, the student game “Discovering Values” was played as a part of the programme of the migration stage. Watch the videos.
On the 27th of April, the Centre for Ethics organized a symposium "Women, witches and the charm of Walpurgis Night”.
Essay Competitions
At the beginning of 2016, the essay competition and the photo contest "Estonia AND the Nordic Countries – Estonia AS a Nordic Country?" took place. The Centre for Ethics, University of Tartu received 36 essays and 33 photos and photo series. The participants were from Estonia, all of the Nordic countries - Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Iceland - and also from England. Essays were written in Estonian, English, Swedish, and Danish.
